Hosted Web Services

The easiest way to get started, though not the most elegant, is to join a hosted web service such as oFoto.com or Yahoo Photos. Many of these services are free, with their revenue being derived from advertising and from selling prints and other items with your photos on them, such as mugs, calendars, and mouse pads. The websites provide simple instructions for creating albums and uploading photos.

PROS: Hosted web services are easy to set up and to maintain. They don't require any HTML or other programming skills. Some services provide basic photo editing capabilities such as cropping and color and contrast adjustment. Many are free, although they do require you to establish an account and may send you promotional e-mails if you aren't careful to opt out of their mailings.

CONS: You are limited in your ability to customize the photo albums and must use the templates provided by the service. Advertising dominates the page on most of the free services, distracting from the photos in your album. The space available for photo storage is limited to what the service provides. Some of the services require visitors to register for a free account in order to access your albums. Also, if the service goes out of business, you could lose your photo albums.

BEST SUITED FOR: Occasional users who want to share only a few photos for a limited period of time. The hosted Web services are also a good choice for those who use traditional film and mail in their exposed film for developing. Many of these services will scan your negatives and post the digital photos online for you, letting you select photos for printing.
